Welcome to Highland Zine Bothy
At the heart of the Highland Zine Bothy is its collection of over 250 zines. We are keen to continually expand our collection of zines so that they represent and amplify the diverse range of voices within our community and beyond.
Whilst our collection is open to a wide range of zine formats and topics, we are particularly interested in those which encompass the experience of Highlanders and Highland living*.
* We are particularly interested in Gaelic zines, because the Gaelic language is an important piece of Scotland's heritage and cultural identity, especially for people in the Highlands.
Not only are zines a socially-engaged art form, but they also tell stories. Storytelling is an integral part of Gaelic culture, as it makes up a major part of the oral tradition in which the Gaelic language was shared and passed down through generations.
A little history lesson: ancient Celts were a pre-literate people. They did not keep written records, write books or leave notes on events or their beliefs. As such, storytellers (known in Gaelic as 'seanchaidh') were vital to society. In the modern context, storytelling remains a symbol of Scottish identity, and is a tradition that Scotland actively practices and enjoys.
