Welcome to Highland Zine Bothy
Mainland Highlands now has its very first zine library: the Highland Zine Bothy, brought to you in a new collaboration between Circus Artspace and DeZiners ๐ค
Est. 2024 in ๐ Inverness, Scotland
The idea to have a zine library in the Highlands was sparked when artist Hester Grant organised the Circus Zine Fest back in May 2021 โ that's where Circus Artspace and DeZiners formally met, and recognised there was a real need for zine activity in the Highlands. Thanks to funding from Scotmid's Community Grant, the Highland Zine Bothy has been brought to life with the aim of celebrating zine activity with our local community by archiving and showcasing zines from the Highlands and beyond.ย
Wait โ what's a bothy?ย
A 'bothy' (from the Gaelic word โbothanโ meaning 'hut') is a rudimentary home-like structure in the wilderness, found in remote locations all across the Highlands.ย Originally used as accommodation for croft labourers, 'bothies' have since been repurposed today for anyone exploring the great outdoors in need of shelter. They provide basic amenities like beds and blankets and are one of the secrets to exploring Scotland's beautiful but remote locations ๐
We felt it was important for our zine library to be fully representative of Highlands culture, hence we built it to be encased in a 'bothy' โ encouraging access to zines for locals and visitors alike, in a structure symbolic of centuries of Scottish community-led initiatives.
